For Change

Aliya Jankowski, LMSW

Licensed Masters Social Worker

Aliya graduated from Wichita State University in 2020 with a BA in psychology.  She received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Kansas in May 2024.

She comes to FPS with a diverse background of experiences working with children, teens, adults, and families.  During her time at Wichita State University, she completed an internship and later employment with the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.  She has three years of experience working with child, teen, and adult survivors of sexual and domestic violence.  During her time at KU, Aliya completed an internship with Bert Nash on the WRAP Team where she focused on practicing individual therapy with elementary-aged students in the school setting.  She also has experience working in child welfare and comes with nearly two years of experience providing crisis interventions and support to individuals and families in the community.

Aliya’s approach to therapy is one of warmth, compassion, and sincerity.  She acknowledges the strength it takes to show up to the first appointment and begin a new journey of self-discovery and growth.  Her work is grounded in the strengths perspective—the belief that all individuals have the ability to create impactful change in their own lives.  She aims to challenge negative self-talk and help individuals see that they are more resilient than they may think.

Aliya strives to guide individuals toward their goals through the lenses of systems theory and the person-in-environment perspective.  She understands that individual interactions are shaped by the environments we live in, thus she works with clients to identify both internal and external stressors.  She values client choice and empowerment by working to identify meaningful goals and celebrating small wins.  She understands the importance of trust in therapy and works to create an open and nonjudgmental space in which individuals can feel safe and heard.

Aliya acknowledges the importance of intersectionality, lived experience, and client expertise on their own lives and situations.  She understands that there is no one-size-fits all approach to therapy and enjoys tailoring her work with clients to best suit their needs.  She achieves this by providing psychoeducation and teaching skills from various treatment modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).  She will also be pursuing additional training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a member of FPS.

Aliya is also taking specialized training the eating disorder recovery and welcomes families struggling with food-related difficulties.

Working toward self recovery...

One key to success in therapy is to celebrate every win big and small. Whether you just got up and came to session, practiced a skill, or achieved a goal, it’s important to recognize the work and dedication it took to get there. We live in an imperfect world; expecting perfection of ourselves only serves to build up the shame, blame, and negative self-talk that keeps us from making progress. I'll help you celebrate the little things while motivating you to push another step forward to the big ones. Progress over perfection every day.

Areas of Specialization

1

Pre-teens and Teens
Aliya works with  pre-teens and teens (10-18) .  She understands the unique challenges and opportunities for growth and development during adolescence that form the foundation for adult life.  She creates a fun, welcoming environment where children and teens feel comfortable opening up, articulating their viewpoints, and taking steps to achieve their goals.

2
Trauma

Aliya works with individuals who’ve experienced trauma.  Experiences ranging from sexual and domestic violence to grief and loss can change the way we view our world. As children, we may not have the skills to cope with these changes. As adults, we may know the skills, but struggle to implement them into our daily routines. For those coping with trauma, Aliya is a strong source of the knowledge, validation, and compassion to help pave the path forward.

3

Adults
As a member of our new depression clinic, Aliya works with adults living with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. She understands the importance of goal setting and skills acquisition in making lasting changes.  She aims to interrupt the patterns of negative self-talk, avoidance, and maladaptive coping that keep individuals stuck in the same cycles of worry and feeling unfulfilled.  She meets people where they’re at to form a meaningful and achievable plan of action and provides guidance and direction in a positive manner.
