Anna McCune, LMSW

Licensed Masters Social Worker

Anna (Ah-nuh) McCune completed her bachelor's degree at Southeast Missouri State University and her masters in Social Work from Park University. Ever since her first job at Community Counseling Center, she's had a passion for working with teens, children, and their families.

Thus far, Anna has spent her career at KVC Behavioral Health Care in Kansas City Kansas, starting as a Family Service Coordinator licensing foster homes until she was promoted to the position of Child Placing Agency and Kinship Supervisor. While there, she lead a thirty-hour Trauma Training Course for foster parents designed to help these families better understand how trauma affects a child’s brain and how they might better work with traumatized children to move through their experience and lead healthier lives. Anna would like to continue working with this population as she moves into private clinical practice.

Anna works with teens and children who struggle with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder. She is also interested developing her skills in divorce and custody proceedings and with couples in marital, relational, and sex therapy. A population of special interested to Anna are LGBTQIA+ teens or those struggling to better understand themselves both in terms of sexual attraction and gender identity.

Through 2021, Anna will be under supervision to meet the requirements for the LSCSW in Kansas. During this time, she can accept KanCare for child and adolescent cases. She can also offer her services at a 50% discount for clients on high deductible plans or those with high copayments to help make therapy more affordable. She is available for both daytime and evening appointments. If you'd like to see Anna, fill out an Ask About Services form.

From Dr. Wes: Anna comes to Family Psychological Services with a background not unlike my own. I worked for many years in the foster care system and wrote the textbook Treating Families and Children in the Child Protective System. She's seen families and kids through some difficult situations. I find this tempers a young clinician to hold up well when working with difficult problems and I think Anna will a brave therapist. She's also a voracious learner and eager to do her best work in every situation. Anna is also highly motivated to develop her skills in couple's therapy using the John Gottman method and excited to see couples. She'll be studying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with me in the fall, and bringing this "third wave" cognitive behavioral therapy to her clients.

I can understand a client's reluctance to try out a young therapist in her developmental phase, but I've found over the years that what newer therapists are often the hardest working, most energetic providers. Though Anna brings a low-key style to her work, she has that kind of energy. I genuinely think you'll like working with her. And it doesn't hurt that she can see cash clients and those with high deductibles for half the cost of our other staff. I suggest you take her up on that offer while it's still good. Based on her tests and interviews, and her initial client contacts, I think Anna will be a pretty busy young professional in a very short time.

Working toward self recovery...

Feeling confident and comfortable with who we are can be hard. Mental health concerns, significant losses, trauma, or strained interpersonal relationships can lead to feeling as if life is unbearable or that there's no light at the end of the tunnel.  This is why working in partnership with individuals and families is such a joy for me. I strive to help those who feel they've lost everything work toward a road of self recovery. Our relationship will revolve around collaboration of treatment goals, trust and respect for one another.  At Family Psychological Services I stay up to date on the most effective evidence-based therapeutic models and interventions to serve you and your family."
